Peace and Security Policy Needs a Gender Perspective
The Gunda Werner Institute is involved particularly in a peace politics appropriate for gender and security policy, because this politics area is up to now a special man's domain. Draughts and strategies are widely gender-blind. Women hardly seem to occur at the decisive level about war, conflict prevention or peace negotiations. And women and men are concerned by forcible conflict holdings differently. Hence, a lasting peace politics and security policy needs a gender perspective.

 - Through six testimonies of women abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), ‘No Longer Silent’ highlights their experience in returning to their communities and rebuilding their lives. Access to housing and land, as well as food security and the desire for their children to receive an education, are amongst their primary challenges and concerns. The documentary exposes the shortcomings of the current Peace, Recovery and Development Plan of the Ugandan Government which has to date not included women as beneficiaries in the reconstruction programmes. more»

 - November 3, 2011 - In recent years, concepts of Transitional Justice have been becoming increasingly important in the context of coming to terms with societies’ past conflicts. The aim is to achieve reconciliation or at least an improvement in relations between the parties that were involved in the conflict, and to find a way for an often divided society to find peaceful forms of coexistence and thus prevent future conflicts. more»

SALMA Project: Final Report 2007-2010

 - The "SALMA campaign" calls for increased gender equality and improved social and legal position of women in the Arab world, focusing on Egypt, Jordan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The name SALMA was chosen by the partner organizations reflecting the network vision; Salma stands for “strong and healthy woman, living in a peaceful society, free from violence and discrimination.”.  - Leymah Roberta Gbowee and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf – both from Liberia – and Tawakkul Karman (Yemen), three outstanding women's rights and peace activists, have been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize. They have, for years, campaigned in different ways and in different forms against the exploitation of women, oppression, war and violence, and for women's rights and those of other suppressed people, doing so at times under extreme conditions and at high personal risk. The Story of the Implementation of 1325 UN Security Council Resolution in Israel

 - Exactly 11 years ago, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1325 (October 31, 2000). This groundbreaking resolution sent a significant message to many countries,including Israel. The principles of the decision, which emphasize representation of women in peace negotiations and increased protection of women and children against violence in conflict situations, were found to be very relevant to the Israeli society that has been dealing with a long-term conflict situation over the years. Results from Op-Ed Competition - Women on Transatlantic Security

 - The contest was a great success. The Atlantic Community received more than one hundred articles on the Arab uprisings, UN resolution 1325, the role of women in conflict dynamics, the international arms trade, cultural diplomacy, Afghanistan, Iran and on climate change. Most of them were of very good quality, with interesting analyses and insightful policy recommendations. more»

10 Points on 10 Years Security Council Resolution 1325 in Europe

 - In view of the 10th anniversary of SCR 1325 and on the initiative of EPLO (European Peacebuilding Liaison Office), civil society organisations from different EU countries developed  a 10-point position paper to implement SCR 1325 in Europe. Gitti Hentschel has contributed to this paper. Over 60 organisations, among them the Gunda Werner Institute and the Women's Security Council, explicitly align themselves with its recommendations. more»
